(Fairhope, ALA) - With the new retirement community nearly complete across from the Fairhope school football field, many have speculated how the new residents would react to the firing of the Pirate cannon with each touchdown during games. In order to combat angry customers, the community's developers have demanded a silencing device be placed permanently on the cannon. With taxpayer dollars in use, the custom-made device has now been installed along with a longer cannon barrel to further reduce noise. The developers have also requested no cheering or noise during football games, which the school administrators have refused, but as compensation, they eventually agreed to shoot licorice and Werther's candy in their general direction from the cannon at times.
